overfishingFor the average person, the term ‘overfishing’ doesn’t hold much significance in their lives. In fact, it generally seems to be an issue that has become way too political to be our concern. Besides the world’s ocean is so vast, right? How can we possibly run out of marine resources. If you think this way, you are one of the more than 60% of people who feel detached about excessive fishing and its impact.

This is a predictable behavior from the average family who does not necessarily rely on coastal resources for to earn a living, or to have food. Words about the environmental and economic impacts of overfishing are still not as loud as the concerns of melting ice caps and extreme weather temperatures. It is natural for people to be apathetic towards environmental concerns that do not directly affect them. However, there is a long list of reasons why we should all be alarmed of the prevalence of excessive fishing, not just in the nearby communities but anywhere in the world.

First off, excessive fishing can totally impede lives in one community. It may take years for this to happen, but once it does it is basically close for a community to recover. An actual case of this actually happened in Newfoundland Canada, where not less than 40,000 people suffered due to lost in livelihood. The city has been known for the abundance of fish catch for so many years, but then a day came when fishermen could no longer catch a single fish nor cod.

With overfishing, we just do not lose the fishes, we lose the entire marine ecosystem. Of the more than 50% of marine resources exploited, only 1% of this has good chances of recovering. While fishing communities are directly affected by this occurrence, commercial fishing industries are also eventually going to suffer. Consequently, this phenomenon will be felt on a bigger scale in a form of food source scarcity. If this goes on, the world can really run out of fish in 40 years or less. Unfortunately, some communities around the world are already starting to feel this.

If we don’t start caring for our resources now, the complete depletion may be hastened to 10 or 20 year earlier. Our awareness can go a long way in fighting unsustainable practices, such as overfishing.

Traveling alone is probably one of the most popular entry on a person’s bucket list. There is a certain thrill to imagining the possibility of conquering an entirely new place alone. People who have done it can attest that it is indeed a remarkable experience, something that distinguishes itself from any other travel experience with friends of loved ones.

Visiting a new place alone gives a person more opportunity to really explore and meet new people. This is even a better experience to try in an area that has a completely different culture and practices than the traveler’s hometown. This experience is more than just capturing beautiful photos, it is more about finding oneself in the stories of different people and places.

While this seems to be a really worth trying adventure not all people are confident enough to take on a solo travel. Here are practical guidelines on how to survive your first travel alone may it be within the country or abroad.

Research about the place that your are about to visit – even the most veteran travelers take time to research about their next destinations. A thorough research about a place and its people will help you adjust even prior to setting foot in your destination. This helps reduce that normal jittery feeling brought about by the excitement and anxiety of visiting a new place alone. Make sure to bring a copy of your research with you. Internet may not always be readily accessible in some destinations.

  1. Pack Light – when you are alone and new to a place the first thing that you need is mobility. You do not have the luxury of leaving some things behind while you explore, or have a companion to assist you with the extra luggages. If possible, make sure to pack all your things in one bag to make hopping from one place to another a lot more convenient.
  2. Go where backpackers go – you can easily do this by doing the first tip. Find out which accommodation places are most famous among backpackers. By staying where they are, you will increase your chances of meeting brave souls like you. These fellow backpackers can also be one of the best few travel buddies that you can have along the way. You will be amazed with how many of them are also braving the new place alone just like you.
  3. Get rid of social media – although it can really be tempting to update people back home of your adventures through social media, you can use that time of updating by taking as many good photos as you can, and talking to the locals. Social media updates have been known to reduce the value of a travel experience, because some travelers tend to be too concerned about “what to post online” rather than focusing on the beauty and diversity that is right in front of them online.
  4. Do not fall for travel tours – the worst that you can do to yourself as a solo traveler is to join package tours. Not only will this reduce your travel experience to programmed site visits, but this may also reinforce loneliness as most of the people who avail these tour packages come in groups. Be assured of your own capability to explore the place.

They say once you survived your first travel alone, it’s hard not to want to do it again. The opportunity for reflection and escape is something that group travels may not necessarily offer. Go where your feet take you.

niagara-falls

Two waterfalls divided by an island, magnificently fly upon the foggy curtain of the foamed and dusty water. Niagara means “thundering water” this name was given to this waterfall by the American Indians, also Niagara is natural border that divides Canada and America. From the Erie the river of Niagara runs calmly for about 56 kilometers, but near the lake Ontario the lake changes its shape and it is transformed in too fast and Wild River that flows towards the cataract in to dusty water and because of that on sunny day hundreds of rainbows can be seen in to the river. After that there is a magnificent waterfall where the water falls in to abyss from about 55 meters and when the water hits the bottom disappears in to wild foam and the sound is like a thunder that never stops.

The island Goat is on the edge of the cascade and splits the river in two parts. The American waterfall on the east side falls in to a straight line and it is about 300 wide. The Canadian waterfall called horseshoe is twice wider than and the same name tells that it has a shape of a horseshoe. The sight is magnificent no matter from which side you see them, but the Canadian side gives you better sight of this waterfalls. Horseshoe can be watched with a small boat that sails in to the water dust.

It is estimated that Niagara falls were formed around 12 500 years or before the end of the last ice age. The water from the Lake Erie leaks on the north side and shapes the lake Ontario, the bottom is of this lake is 100 meters under the water. Before the comb from which the water falls was 11 kilometers on the north side and that is the place were todays Quinton is, but because of the water that goes every second on it, the comb moves for 1.2 meters and for some 25000 years it will get near the Lake Erie.

On my travels I met some really interesting Canadians. One group stood out in particular. They lived about 100kms from the falls. They were the nicest, coolest startup company in Kitchener Waterloo. I had a lot of fun with them as they showed me around the Niagara region. There area is known for Oktoberfest. The second largest outside of Germany!
